Planning guide

At a glance

  • Best time: November to March, the only months ships visit
  • How long: 10 to 12 days for a classic Antarctic Peninsula trip from Ushuaia; 18 to 23 days if you add the Falklands and South Georgia
  • Fitness: easy to moderate. You'll climb in and out of small boats and walk on snow
How trips work

Almost everyone goes on an expedition cruise from Ushuaia in Argentina, crossing the Drake Passage (about two days each way, sometimes rough). Choose an operator that belongs to IAATO, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, which sets the rules for landings and wildlife distances. Smaller ships (under about 200 passengers) can land more people at a time and get more time ashore. Fly-the-Drake trips skip the crossing by flying to King George Island, at a higher price and with weather risk.

What you'll see by month
  • November: pristine snow, penguins courting.
  • December to January: long days, penguin chicks, warmest weather. Peak demand.
  • February to March: whales are most active, chicks are bigger, and prices are often lower.
Rough costs per person (excluding flights to Argentina)
  • $$$: last-minute deals in Ushuaia or triple cabins: from about US$7,000 to $10,000
  • $$$$: standard expedition ship, twin cabin: about US$10,000 to $18,000
  • $$$$$: luxury ships, suites, South Georgia itineraries: US$20,000 to $40,000+

Many operators offer single-share cabins so solo travellers avoid the single supplement, which is a great way to meet a travel buddy.

Good to know
  • Buy travel insurance that includes emergency evacuation; many operators require it.
  • Seasickness medication is worth discussing with your doctor before the Drake.
  • Book 12 to 18 months ahead for the best cabins, or look for late deals if you're flexible.

Safety: Remote expedition travel. Book only with an established expedition operator.
