Planning guide
At a glance
- Best time: April to May and September to October, for mild weather and clear skies
- How long: 4 to 6 days in Beijing gives you one or two Wall days plus the city
- Fitness: moderate to hard. Sections are steep with uneven steps
Which section?
- Mutianyu: restored, beautiful and family-friendly, with a cable car and toboggan. Busy but manageable.
- Jinshanling: partly restored, stunning views and fewer people. Good for a half-day hike.
- Jiankou to Mutianyu: wild, unrestored and steep. Only with an experienced local guide.
- Badaling: closest to Beijing and very crowded. Fine if time is short.
Getting there
Fly into Beijing (PEK or PKX). Mutianyu is about 1.5 to 2 hours away by road. Many travellers book a private car or small-group tour for the day, which avoids early starts on public buses.
Entry rules
China has expanded visa-free entry for up to 30 days for citizens of a list of countries, currently until the end of 2026, but the list changes and doesn't include everyone (for example, the US and UK were not on it in late 2025). Check your passport against the official rules before you book.
Rough costs per person (excluding international flights)
- $ to $$: hostels and public transport: about US$50 to $90 a day
- $$$: good hotels plus a private driver for the Wall day: about US$150 to $250 a day
- $$$$ to $$$$$: luxury hotels and private guided hikes: US$350+ a day
Good to know
- Set up a payment app (Alipay or WeChat Pay accept foreign cards) before you go. Many places don't take cards.
- Download an offline map and translation app. Some Western apps don't work in China without roaming data.
- Bring water and sun protection. Wall sections have little shade.
