Planning guide

At a glance

  • Best time: January to mid-March and June to October, the drier seasons
  • How long: 7 to 9 days on the mountain. Longer routes give you a better chance of reaching the top
  • Fitness: hard. No climbing skills needed, but the altitude (5,895 m) is serious
Choosing a route
  • Lemosho (7 to 8 days): quieter start, beautiful scenery, good acclimatisation. A popular choice.
  • Machame (6 to 7 days): scenic and busy. Choose the 7-day version.
  • Northern Circuit (8 to 9 days): the longest and quietest, with the best acclimatisation.
  • Marangu (5 to 6 days): huts instead of tents, but shorter itineraries mean lower success rates.
Rules and fees

You must climb with a licensed operator and guide. Park fees (conservation, camping or hut, rescue, plus VAT) are paid by your operator and add up to roughly US$900 to $1,400 per person for a 7 to 8 day climb. That's why very cheap quotes often cut corners on staff pay, food or safety.

Rough costs per person (excluding flights)
  • $$: budget group climbs: about US$1,800 to $2,500 total
  • $$$: reputable mid-range operator: about US$2,500 to $4,000
  • $$$$ to $$$$$: small private groups, premium camps: US$4,500 to $7,000+

Add tips for the guide, cook and porters, typically US$250 to $400 per climber. Choose an operator that follows the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project's fair-treatment standards.

Good to know
  • Talk to a doctor about altitude sickness and medication before you go. Descend if symptoms get worse.
  • Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Many people add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards.
  • Ask a travel clinic about yellow fever and malaria advice.

Safety: High-altitude climb. Use a licensed operator and never rely on a stranger as your guide.
