Planning guide
At a glance
- Best time: May to June and September to October. July and August are hot, expensive and crowded
- How long: 3 to 4 days on Santorini, plus 3 to 7 days on other islands
- Fitness: easy, but the villages have many steps
Beating the crowds
Santorini gets very busy when cruise ships are in, usually late morning to late afternoon. Greece now charges cruise passengers an extra fee to visit Santorini and Mykonos in peak season. Visit Oia and Fira early in the morning or in the evening, watch the sunset from Imerovigli or Pyrgos instead of the packed Oia castle, and spend the middle of the day at a beach or winery.
Island hopping
Ferries link Santorini with Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos and Crete. Fast ferries take 1 to 3 hours. Book summer ferries ahead on an official operator or booking site. Naxos and Paros are cheaper bases with great beaches and food.
Getting there
Fly to Santorini (JTR) directly from many European cities in season, or via Athens. You can also ferry from Piraeus in Athens (about 5 to 8 hours).
Rough costs per person (excluding flights)
- $ to $$: hostels and inland guesthouses, gyros and ferries: about €70 to €120 a day
- $$$: caldera-view hotel in shoulder season, tavernas: about €200 to €350 a day
- $$$$ to $$$$$: cave suites with plunge pools, private boat trips: €600 to €1,500+ a day
Good to know
- Greece charges a nightly climate resilience fee per room, higher in summer and for better hotels.
- Rent an ATV or car only if you're confident on narrow, busy roads, and always wear a helmet.
- Bring sturdy sandals. Volcanic beaches get very hot.
