Planning guide

At a glance

  • Best time: late May to September, when most roads are open. September is quieter. Winter visits are by snowcoach or snowmobile only
  • How long: 3 to 5 days
  • Fitness: easy, with many short boardwalk trails. Longer hikes are available
What to see
  • Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin: eruptions roughly every 60 to 110 minutes; check predictions at the visitor centre.
  • Grand Prismatic Spring: best seen from the Fairy Falls overlook trail.
  • Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone: Lower Falls and Artist Point.
  • Lamar and Hayden valleys: bison, elk and, with luck and binoculars, wolves and bears, best at dawn and dusk.
Fees (2026)

The private vehicle fee is US$35 for 7 days. Since January 1, 2026, visitors who aren't US residents and are 16 or older pay an extra US$100 per person at Yellowstone and 10 other popular parks, unless they buy the US$250 non-resident annual pass. Bring US ID if you live in the US.

Where to stay

In-park lodges and campgrounds book out up to a year ahead for summer. Gateway towns include West Yellowstone, Gardiner, Cody and Jackson (for a combined trip with Grand Teton). The park is huge: allow time, as driving between areas takes 1 to 2 hours.

Rough costs per person (excluding flights)
  • $ to $$: camping and groceries, sharing a car: about US$60 to $120 a day
  • $$$: park lodges or motels in gateway towns: about US$200 to $350 a day
  • $$$$: guided wildlife safaris and premium lodges: US$400+ a day
Good to know
  • Stay at least 100 yards (91 m) from bears and wolves and 25 yards (23 m) from bison and elk. Bison injure visitors every year.
  • Stay on boardwalks in thermal areas; the ground can be thin crust over boiling water.
  • Carry bear spray on trails and know how to use it.
